Health And Finance In Dreams

Wednesday, May 19th, 2010

A main concern we’re all very much aware of is our hope to be physically fit to be able to rely on our stamina and energy to work and work effectively. In dreams, symbols of work are any object, person or tool that resembles connections to work, our attitudes, job satisfaction, concerns, job security, salary increases and well being to work.

A man I know had the following dream. At the time of the dream, he was in good health, a professional earning 100K a year. His life was good; that is, until the night he had a dream that ultimately would change his life forever.

The dream opens with the man walking on a sidewalk near his apartment. This was the regular path he’d walked for years. Turning the corner up the block towards his apartment, he was compelled to look down at his hands. Holding his hands up, he saw his hands quickly begin to take on a different appearance: His hands began to tighten into a fist. As his hands continued to close, they took on a crippled, disfigured look.

Alarmed, he tried to straighten them. Unable to move his fingers, he put his hands into the pockets of the sweat suit he was wearing thinking everything would be all right shortly. As he placed his hands into the pockets of the sweat suit, he realized there were no pockets, only openings. Placing his hands into the openings, he walked down the sidewalk for 20 feet. Having difficulty composing himself, he took his hands out of the openings hoping they would be normal. To his dismay, his hands were now deformed, and he felt severe pain shooting down his wrists through his hands up to his fingertips.

Becoming alarmed, he stared focused on his hands. The harder he tried to focus, the more blurred his vision became until he couldn’t see the image of his hands. As he tried to adjust his vision, he now felt a sharp pain in his forehead that nearly sent him to his knees. Overtaken by the experience, the man stopped, sitting down on some leaves under a tree on the front lawn of a neighbor’s house. As he began to close his eyes, he felt a gentle breeze blowing the leaves away from him and across the lawn.

On the verge of terror, he reached into the opening of his sweat pants, grabbed a hold of his wallet containing his driver’s license, money and medical insurance card in the event his condition worsened. Opening the wallet, he found the wallet empty, holding only a medical insurance card. Fumbling with the wallet, he was able to pull out the insurance card. With blurred vision, he read the word “Cobra” on the card. Cobra insurance is the medical insurance provided by employers that goes into effect when one becomes disabled. Holding the card, he watched the card slowly completely disappear in his hand.

After minutes passed taking long, deep breaths, the man opened his eyes relieved to find that his hands were normal, vision clear and the pain in his forehead had gone.

Again on his feet, he glanced at his expensive sweat suit to find it had changed into frayed, dirty clothing covered with holes. Very pleased to physically be feeling better, the man briskly walked toward his apartment. Now at his apartment, he looked down and saw that the sweat suit was again beautiful, new and clean. Reaching for the door of his apartment complex, the man awoke.

The Interpretation Of The Dream Using Each Key Word Walking/Sidewalk in the beginning of the dream represents stability, financial security, success and harmony in the man’s family and workplace. This is a lifestyle of safety, consistency, routine and control over his life and environment.

Older Apartment represents a temporary refuge. Taking into consideration the other events occurring in the dream, the man’s apartment represents change, the unknown, place of waiting, failing health and possible death.

Hands/Crippled/Disfigured Hands represent our ability to work, sustain and provide for ourselves and family. When the man saw his hands change to crippled/disfigured ones represented failing health and financial distress. Watching his hands change from normal hands to disfigured hands represents change in his life and lifestyle will come suddenly and without warning.

Pockets/No Pockets suddenly realizing the sweat shirt had no pockets, but only openings where the pockets had been. He slowly placed his hands into the openings represents he will ignore symptoms of illnesses. Having no pockets also carries the dream meaning that though the man will have some health insurance, his current insurance will not last through the time of illness.

Severe Pain/Forehead/Knees Pain deep in the man’s forehead represented a physical problem, confusion, disbelief and helplessness he felt seeing changes to his body. Years later, he would be told the forehead pain was caused by a benign tumor near his brain; and that over time, if not removed, may cause blindness and death. As the man stared down at his hands, he felt his knees go weak, yet managed to regain his balance. The weakness in his knees represented that though the mind is strong, the body will no longer function as it once had; his hands, other parts of his body and finances will be affected.

Stared/Blurred Vision Fully aware of what was happening to his hands, he began to watch his hands change represents his entire life will be put on hold; his life and level of physical energy will be controlled by what is shown in the dream.

Sat Down/Neighbor’s House/Tree Too weak to stand, the man sits down under a tree near leaves on his neighbor’s lawn. Before closing his eyes, he feels a gentle wind blowing the leaves across the lawn away from him. The tree/leaves represent change. In this dream, the wind represents that most of his material possessions will be taken from him due to illness.

Expensive/Sweat suit/Frayed, Dirty, Holes The expensive sweat suit represents the man’s standard of living. The sweat suit turning frayed and dirty with holes represents the trials and financial hardships he will be suffering as a result of illness.

Wallet/Driver’s License, Money/Medical Insurance Card The man took out his wallet finding his driver’s license and money gone. In the wallet was only his medical insurance card, turning into a Cobra insurance card. The card slowly disappeared representing his medical insurance wouldn’t last for the term of his illnesses. The missing driver’s license represented the man’s identity and self worth would be shattered. The missing money represented suffering financial losses illness would cause him.

Beautiful/Clean/Looking New Unlocking the door of his apartment, he saw his hands healed and the sweat suit again clean and new. This represented that despite health problems, eventually his life would be restored to normal.

The Outcome Of The Dream: Months after having this dream, the man was diagnosed with chronic bilateral carpal tunnel. He had collected unemployment. After a year, he was told his Cobra insurance would end, no longer covering expenses for doctor bills or prescriptions.

Despondent, the day his Cobra insurance ran out, he remembered he was a Vietnam veteran. He immediately went down to the VA Hospital inquiring about eligibility benefits. Within hours, he was approved and VA started covering all his medical expenses.

In regards to the man’s eyesight and the pain in the forehead, doctors at the VA Hospital discovered a tumor between his eyes. Without treatment, blindness and death would likely occur. He was informed of a new research drug that had just been approved; it slows the growth of tumors stabilizing eyesight. In 2005, the VA Hospital excised the tumor.

As of this date, his eyesight is good and he is in fine health. The material belongings the man lost after having the dream have been replenished. The very day his UE benefits ran out, he qualified for Social Security disability benefits, obtaining an unexpected back benefits check for $22K. The dream the man had experienced years earlier had accurately and completely revealed his future, just as he had seen it play in the dream. Do Burned Out & Depressed Plastic Surgeons Commit More Mistakes

Monday, May 10th, 2010

Surgeons running medical spas who are burned out or depressed are more likely to mention they fairly recently made a major error on the job, as outlined by the largest survey to date on doctor burnout.

The brand new studies say that the mental well-being of the aesthetic surgeon is in connected to a higher than average rate of self-reported medical errors, something which may undermine patient safety a lot more than the exhaustion which is usually blamed for most of the medical errors.

Despite the fact that surgeons don’t appear very likely to make errors than physicians in other disciplines, surgery mistakes regularly have worse consequences for patients on account of the interventional nature of the work. Some people estimate that possibly 10 percent of hospitalized men and women are impacted by medical errors.

“Folks have spoke of fatigue and extended working hours, but our out comes indicate which the prominent contributing factors to self-reported medical errors are burnout and depression,” said Charles M. Balch, M.D., a professor of surgery at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine and among the many study’s leaders. “People have to take this into account to a greater degree than in past times. Frankly, burnout and despression symptoms hadn’t been on everyones radar screen.”

9% of the 7,905 surgeons who replied to this June 2008 survey drafted by the American College of Surgeons for a report guided by researchers from Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine and the Mayo Medical center described having made a top medical blunder in the last three months. Overall, forty % of the surgeons who responded to the survey reported they were burned out.

The researchers interviewed a range of questions, including queries that graded three aspects of burnout — mental weariness, depersonalization and personal achievement — and others which screened for despression symptoms.

Every one-point step-up on a scale which measured depersonalization — a sense of disengagement or of working with patients as objects instead of as human beings — has been associated with an eleven percent rise in the likelihood of reporting an error. Each one-point increase on a scale computing emotional weariness was tied in with a five percent increase.

Errors further varied by area of expertise.

Cosmetic surgeons practicing obstetrics/gynecology and plastic surgery were noticeably less likely to report mistakes than traditional surgeons.

Analysts recognized the restrictions of self-reporting studies, stating they weren’t able to tell from their studying whether burnout and depression ended in more medical errors or whether medical blunders precipitated burnout and depressive disorders associated with the plastic surgeons who made the errors.

End results are now being published via the internet in the Annals of Surgery and will be available in the printed journal in an approaching issue.

Notably, the study reveals which the amount of evenings on call each week and the number of hours worked are not connected to reported errors after controlling for variables.

“The most imperative issue for those who support other cosmetic surgeons that do not appear well is to talk about it with him or her so that they’re able to get the support they need,” says Julie A. Freischlag, M.D., chair of the Department of Surgery at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine and another of the study’s creators.

Laser Clinic MD is a community of plastic surgeons, cosmetic dermatologists, and aesthetic physicians with more than 5,500 medical spa members world-wide and offers patients resources for Smartlipo in Irving TX and offers information on nonsurgical cosmetic medical technologies and treatments for patients.

You Can Reduce The Chances Of Breast Cancer

Thursday, May 6th, 2010

We hear it all the time…lose weight for your health. Few people however, realize the extent to which this is critical to their physical well being and ultimately their life expectancy.

In January 2003, the Journal of the American Medical Association featured a study finding that obesity appears to lessen life expectancy, especially among young adults. The researchers compared Body-Mass Index (BMI) to longevity and found a correlation between premature death and higher BMIs. For example, a 20-year-old white male, 5′10″ weighing 288 pounds with a BMI of greater than 40 was estimated to lose 13 years of his life as a result of obesity.Jamie McManus, M.D., F.A.A.F.P. and author of “Your Personal Guide to Wellness” notes that while this study referenced extreme levels of obesity, there are still millions of overweight people in developed countries with a life expectancy rate that is three to five years less than their healthy-weight counterparts. She also estimates that there are 600,000 obesity related deaths each year in America.

Just how does obesity shorten our lifespan? The answer to this question is complex, yet there is a clear link between obesity and the development of cancer. An extensive study conducted by the American Cancer Institute involving 750,000 people showed that obesity significantly increased the risk of cancer developing in the following organs: breast, colon, ovaries, uterus, pancreas, kidneys and gallbladder.

Michael Thun, MD, vice-president of epidemiology and surveillance research for the American Cancer Society (ACS) says one reason obesity may raise cancer risk is because fat cells produce a form of estrogen called estradiol that promotes rapid division of cells, increasing chances of a random genetic error while cells are replicating, which can lead to cancer. In addition, fat centered around the abdomen may increase insulin and insulin-like growth factors in the blood, which may increase cancer risk.

“Women who are obese after menopause have a 50% higher relative risk of breast cancer,” notes Thun, “and obese men have a 40% higher relative risk of colon cancer…. Gallbladder and endometrial cancer risks are five times higher for obese individuals”. There is evidence that cancer rates in developed countries are increasing at 5 to 15 times faster than developing countries. A major contributor to this alarming reality has proven to be diet. In populations where the diet consists mostly of fresh fruit and vegetables and whole grains – in contrast to the typical Western diet of fatty meats, refined flours, oils and sugars – the risk of cancer is much lower.

The interaction of diet and the development of cancer is an active field of research and Dr David Heber, M.D., Ph.D. and author of “What Color is Your Diet”, says “It appears that diet has its most significant effects after the cancer has already formed, acting to inhibit or stimulate the growth of that cancer”. At the risk of oversimplifying a complex set of interactions, the typical Western diet that leads to obesity may actually act to stimulate the growth of cancer cells. It is never too late to improve your health through healthful eating and adopting a more health-giving lifestyle. Here are simple steps to follow which can make an immediate improvement to your health and vitality.

1. Check your Body Mass Index (BMI) to determine if weight has become a health risk. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 60% of Americans are overweight, defined as having a BMI (a ratio of height to weight) over 25. Of those, nearly half (27%) qualify as obese, with a body mass index of 30 or more. In 1980, just 15% of Americans were considered obese. You can check your BMI at the website below.

2. Match your diet to your body’s requirements. If you eat and drink more calories than your body requires you will put on weight. Learn to control calories and portion sizes, make recipes leaner, and eat infrequently from fast food restaurants. Also learn how to snack with healthful choices.

3. Color your diet with a large variety of colorful, cancer-fighting fruit and vegetables. There are seven different color ranges of both fruit and vegetables and by choosing between 5 to 9 daily serves from a wide range of fruit and vegetables, we are extending our consumption of cancer (and other disease) fighting nutrients.

4. Eat lean protein with every meal. Protein provides a powerful signal to the brain providing a longer sense of fullness. The right source of protein is essential to controlling your hunger with fewer calories and necessary to maintain your lean muscle mass. Choices of protein should be flavored soy shakes with fruit; the white meat of chicken and turkey, seafood such as shrimps, prawns scallops and lobster and ocean fish or vegetarians may prefer soy based meat substitutes.

5. Rev up your metabolism with activity. If you want to enjoy a lifetime of well-being, exercise is a key ingredient. Colleen Doyle, MS, RD, director of nutrition and physical activity for the American Cancer Society (ACS), says adults should do something for 30 minutes each day that takes as much effort as a brisk walk. Children should be active for an hour each day. We are more likely to develop habits around things we enjoy, so seek activities which you enjoy doing. It is also helpful to build physical activity into your daily routine: use the stairs instead of the escalator or lift at work, park your car in the parking bay furthest from the super marketing and don’t use the remote control to change TV channels.

6. Get support to ensure you develop a healthful eating plan and reach your goal weight. Whilst a small percentage of people possess the discipline to lose weight, many obese people have developed strong thoughts and habits concerning the food they eat. In order to establish new habits, most people respond well to some form of consistent encouragement and coaching. A study, “Effects of Internet Behavioral Counseling on Weight Loss in Adults at Risk of Type 2 Diabetes” shows that participants who had the support of weight loss coaching lost more weight than those who didn’t. The study concluded that the support of a weight loss coach can significantly improve weight loss results.

Being overweight or obese has been identified next to smoking, as the most preventable major risk to developing cancer. Even small weight losses have been shown to have beneficial health effects. So it’s never to late to start and you can never be too young or too old to be concerned about your health and do something about achieving a more healthy weight. Staying healthy means longer life.
